The 2025 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign was a powerful moment of reflection by the global community to put an end to violence against women and girls. Around the world, governments, civil society, humanitarian organizations, and international bodies came together to highlight one of the most persistent human rights violations of our time—gender-based violence, especially as it increasingly takes on a digital form.

According to UN Women, one in three women worldwide will face physical or sexual violence at some point in their lives. This shocking statistic emphasizes the urgent need for ongoing advocacy, meaningful conversations, and inclusive communication strategies that prioritize the experiences of survivors. In fragile and conflict-affected areas like South Sudan, these discussions become even more crucial, as women and girls encounter multiple risks both online and offline.

As the international community celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action—one of the most progressive global frameworks for promoting women’s rights—this year’s 16 Days of Activism served as a reminder for more voices to join the call of tackling the new threats –technology-facilitated GBV violence and online abuse directed at women and girls.

Ruthilla Digital was honored to contribute to this vital campaign by amplifying its messages campaigns, through compelling visual storytelling. Commissioned by a  client for the first time, Ruthilla Digital ensuring that the energy, voices, and purpose of the campaign echoed with cutting edge photography coverage during a key event of the 16 Days of Activism.

The event was organized by Democracy Reporting International (DRI),and the United Nations Integrated Electoral Assistance Team (UNIEAT), with valuable support from the European Union Delegation.

The 16 fete brought together a vibrant mix of stakeholders, including government officials, civil society groups, youth leaders, advocates for women’s rights, development partners, and members of the international community. This gathering served as a crucial platform to address issues like gender-based violence, digital safety, and the vital link between democratic participation and women’s rights.

Through the lens and creative and dynamic team Ruthilla Digital amplified the the story of the campaign in South Sudan by capturing over 100 high resolution photos, highlighting the impact of the work done by DRI and UNIEAT teams.

These images did more than just document the event; they encapsulated moments of conversation, solidarity, reflection, and advocacy—showing the real power behind policy discussions and the everyday experiences of women and girls impacted by digital and gender-based violence.

Visual storytelling was key in helping the campaign reach a broader audience. The client utilized these photographs across various communication channels to enhance advocacy messages, support reporting to donors and partners, and raise awareness among national, regional, and international stakeholders. By transforming complex issues into compelling visual narratives, Ruthilla Digital ensured that conversations about digital abuse and gender equality extended far beyond the event itself.

For humanitarian organizations and UN agencies, engaging visual content is not just about visibility; it’s also crucial for accountability, learning, and mobilization. Ruthilla Digital’s approach was rooted in ethical storytelling principles, taking into account safeguarding considerations and a thorough understanding of humanitarian communication standards. Each photograph was taken with a deep respect for dignity, context, and consent, aligning with the best practices expected by international and UN partners.

The success of this project really highlights Ruthilla Digital’s dedication to backing organizations that focus on gender equality, human rights, and social justice. By enhancing communication campaigns during significant global events like the 16 Days of Activism, Ruthilla Digital plays a vital role in challenging harmful norms, uplifting survivor-centered stories, and advocating for inclusive, rights-based solutions.

In today’s world, where digital platforms are increasingly influencing social and political dynamics, tackling digital violence against women and girls has become a necessity, not just an option. With their strategic visual communication, Ruthilla Digital made sure that this crucial message was not only heard but also visually impactful.
